Lady Devils' Perrault, Smith selected Class 4A All-State

Class 4A state champion St. Thomas More swept top honors when the Louisiana Sports Writers Association released the All-State team recently.

Plaquemine's Mallory Perrault and Amber Smith, both first-team District 6-4A selections were chosen honorable mention.

Adria Waguespack was selected Coach of the Year after leading the Lady Cougars to a 20-7 overall record en route to capturing the state title. Freshmen catcher Bailey Hemphill was chosen Outstanding Player after batting .595 with 16 home runs, 15 doubles and 57 RBIs.

Hemphill was joined on the first team by three teammates: pitcher Whitney Romero, shortstop Sarah Arceneaux and outfielder Jaime Landry.

The remaining first team softball selections were pitchers Belle Chasse's Jackie Johnson, Neville's Meagan Lively, DeRidder's Jamie Wentzel, first base Beau Chene's McKinley Marks, second base Vandebilt Catholic's Makelle Pena, third base Teurlings Catholic's Morgan Angelle, outfielders Academy of Our Lady's Alexis Cressonie, Alexandria's Kimber Gruehl and utility players Ellender's Kyler Trosclair, Grant's Allie Delrie, West Ouachita's Ali Medlin, Lutcher's Kassidy Zeringue and Teurlings Catholic's Summer Ellyson 14-10.

Plaquemine advanced to the postseason for the fourth consecutive year and claimed District 6-4A co-champs honors for the first time. The Lady Green Devils were 7-1 in District 6-4A play and finished 16-10 overall after falling to quarterfinalist Grant in the first round.

Perrault, the 6-4A MVP, posted a 17-8 record this season, while batting .479 with 37 stolen bases as the Lady Devils' leadoff hitter.

Smith batted .525 with five home runs and 14 stolen bases.
