PLAQUEMINE - St. John the Evangelist High School overcame an early deficit to build a seven-run lead before winning in walk off fashion 10-9 in the season opener after Archbishop Hannan rallied in the seventh inning on Tuesday night at Lady Eagle Park.

The Lady Eagles (1-0) were eliminated from the Class 1A playoffs by Hannan last season at the Louisiana High School Athletic Association Top 56 Softball Tournament in Sulphur.

Kyndal Guillory earned the win in the circle  striking out four over seven innings.

Payton Passantino was 3-for-3 at the plate with two doubles, while Gracie Trahan was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs, Shelbi Strickland was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs, Brooklyn Pearce was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Alana Blanchard had two RBIs.

Jensen Volz took the loss for Hannan.

With the game tied 9-9 in the bottom of the seventh, Passantino led off the inning by lining through the right infield. Blanchard followed with a single to shallow left to put runners on the corners following Carlee Smith’s sacrifice bunt.

Trahan then lined a double over the centerfielder to score pinch running Krista Passantino and deliver the victory.

Hannan took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning courtesy Olivia Oalman’s double to the left gap. St. John threatened in the bottom half when Pearce dropped a single to shallow center and Passantino crushed a double off the fence in the right gap but came up empty.

The Lady Eagles scored three runs to take the lead in the third. Trahan lined over the centerfielder and raced home for an inside the park home run before Strickland lined a double to left. McKenzie Richard followed with an RBI-single through the center of the infield and Pearce added a RBI-single to the right gap to give St. John a 3-2 lead.

Passantino led off the bottom of the fourth with another double and Blanchard’s grounder plated a run before Strickland’s added two more to push the lead to 6-2.

Guillory dropped a single to shallow right and a pass ball scored pinch running Zoe Ordoyne before Pearce’s grounder made it 8-2. Blanchard drove in another run in the fifth.

Hannan came alive in the sixth when two runs scored on Kaitlyn Harris’ double to the right gap to cut the deficit to 9-4.

The Lady Hawks plated five runs in the seventh to knot it up. Volz crushed a two-run home run over the centerfield fence and Caylee Palazzalo followed with a two-run double before a pass ball tied it.
