Lady Devils hold off St. Michael the Archangel

PLAQUEMINE -Plaquemine Senior High School jumped out to a double-digit early lead before taking a 15-9 District 6-4A victory over St. Michael the Archangel at Lady Green Devil Park on Thursday.
The Lady Green Devils (12-8, 2-1), under coach Mary Gaye David, dropped their first district game of the season 6-5 to Lutcher on Tuesday. Plaquemine travels to Tara Thursday and St. Michael Tuesday. The Lady Devils travel to Plaquemine in the Annual Pink Game April 11 at 5 p.m. with proceeds benefitting the Susan Komen Foundation for breast cancer research.
Mallory Perrault earned the win for Plaquemine in three innings of work allowing two hits and walking two. She also scored two runs.
Madison Hebert scattered four hits and walked five while striking out three in four innings of relief.
Mia Johnson was 3-for-4 at the plate with a home run, double, five RBIs and two runs. Amber Granger (two RBIs, run) and Kameryn Fairchild (double, three runs, stolen base) were each 2-for-4.
Kristyn Fairchild was 1-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and one run and Tina Michelli was 1-for-4 with a triple, two RBIs and two stolen bases.
Johnson’s double plated two runs for Plaquemine in the first inning after Perrault reached on an error and Kameryn Fairchild was hit by a pitch.
Kristyn Fairchild followed with a one-run double before Hope Spencer’s single drove in another run to make it 4-0.
Michelli’s two-run triple added to the lead before Perrault reached on an error to give Plaquemine a 7-0 lead.
Johnson’s two-run blast extended the lead to 11-0 following Granger’s two-run single.
Jamie Jewell rolled a triple to the rightfield wall with one out in the second inning but was thrown out at home by third baseman Johnson to catcher Spencer after Hannah Gregoire was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
St. Michael loaded the bases again in the third inning but came up empty. Alex Wicker led off with a double and was left stranded.
Plaquemine added insurance in the bottom half. Kameryn Fairchild’s double to right plated Granger, who lined to center, before Johnson followed with another RBI hit to push the lead to 13-1.
Wicker drove in a run with a single in the fourh before Christie Slay lined through the center of the infield to cut it to 13-4.
Andrea Ramirez lined to center in the fifth to drive in two more runs. The Lady Green Devils answered in the bottom half when Hebert drew a bases loaded walk to go ahead 14-7. Kameryn Fairchild and Johnson each reached on dropped fly balls before Kristyn Fairchild drew a walk to load the bases.
Hebert struckout Camille DeBenedetto to end the game but not until St. Michael added two more runs. Cameron Anderson beat out a grounder, Maddie Newchurch drew a walk and Wicker lined to left to load the bases. Ramirez grounded by short to reflect the final tally.
