PLAQUEMINE - Plaquemine Senior High School continued to fight off a persistant Belle Chasse for an 11-9 Class 4A bi-district playoff victory on Tuesday evening at Lady Devil Park.

The No. 9 seed Lady Green Devils (17-9), under coach Mary Gaye David, advance to the regionals for the first time since 2010 where they will face No. 8 Ursuline Academy in New Orleans. The winner advances to the quarterfinals at the Louisiana High School Athletic Association Fast Pitch 56 State Softball Tournament in Sulphur against No. 1 Cabrini or No. 17 West Ouachita on May 2. No. 24 Belle Chasse  finishes the season 11-17.

“I know we were nervous coming in,” David said. “We had a first round game here last year that we should have won. It says a lot about you when you don’t play your best and walk away with a win. I feel like that is what happened today.

“We always lean on the top of the order but we are doing a better job of scoring runs in the bottom of the lineup. We got people on base but didn’t always have the timely hit.”

Mallory Perrault earned the win for Plaquemine striking out five while walking two. Perrault also was 1-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs.

Mia Johnson was 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs and Madison Hebert was 1-for-2 with two RBIs.

Kelsey Riley went 4-for-5 to lead the Lady Cardinals at the plate. Brianna Duquette was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Hayley Barbazon was 1-for-3 with two RBI.

Plaquemine took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Amber Granger was hit by a pitch and scored on Johnson’s single. Belle Chasse tied it in the second when Barbazon scored on Danielle Stubbs’ single.

The Lady Cardinals went ahead 2-1 in the third on Haley Johnson’s bouncer through the infield that scored Duquette.

The Lady Green Devils quickly answered with five runs in the bottom half. Hebert’s two-run single to right put Plaquemine back ahead after Johnson was hit by a pitch and Kristyn Fairchild drew a walk.

Granger added an RBI-single to shallow right after two more runs scored when Perrault reached on errant throw after Tina Michelli drew a walk.

Belle Chasse responded with four more runs in the fourth inning to tie it 6-6. Riley dropped an RBI-single to left and Duquette followed with a two-run single through the center of the infield.

But Plaquemine had the answer again with three more runs in the bottom half that chased starting pitcher Barbazon in favor of Mallory Horton.

Fairchild lined to left and Hope Spencer and Hebert each drew walks to load the bases. Emily Brodnax, Perrault and Granger then each drove in a run to make it 9-6.

Belle Chasse would knot it up one more time in the sixth after Riley and Duquette each lined through the center of the infield to lead off the inning. Barbazon hit the same spot one out later to drive in two runs.

The Lady Green Devils rallied in the bottom of the sixth to reflect the final tally. Perrault was hit by a pitch and stole second base before scoring on Granger’s liner through the infield. Johnson then smashed a triple to the right corner after a pass ball scored another run but was left stranded.

Plaquemine induced three straight ground balls in the seventh frame to end the game.
