PLAQUEMINE - The LHSAA volleyball season began with scrimmages this week and continue with jamborees set for next week.

St. John, under coach Chase Mancuso, hosted Plaquemine, under coach John Badeaux in a scrimmage Tuesday. The Lady Eagles will also scrimmage five teams at Woodlawn Saturday before facing Donaldsonville, Brusly and Scotlandville in the Westside Jamboree at Brusly High School Aug. 27.

The Lady Eagles set a school record in victories with a 38-6 overall record and were 10-0 in District 3-V. St. John also advanced to the state tournament.

Key losses include Jessie Brown, Kamryn Theriot, Randi Seneca and Jayme Rivet. Top returnees include Victoria Weaver, Keri Yarbrough, Carlee Smith, Kaycee Keller and Emily Delahaye.

White Castle, under coach Tammy W. Pierce, also scrimmaged Tuesday. The Lady Bulldogs will compete in the Westside Jamboree Aug. 27-28. They return four starting players in Skylar O'Bear, Shylar O'Bear, Alaina Williams and Ariel Bell to a regional playoff team that finished 16-11 overall.

"We will be small in numbers but big in heart and determination," Pierce said.

The Lady Green Devils will also participate in the jamboree Aug. 27 at Brusly.

"We are once again young," Badeaux said. "We lost only two seniors from last year's squad and have only one senior on this years team. I think that with the returning group from last year, we can compete for a district title and a playoff birth."
