Riverside Academy sweeps Lady Eagles in season opener
RESERVE - St. John the Evangelist High School was swept by Riverside Academy 12-25, 14-25, 16-25 in the regular season opener for both teams on Tuesday night. Plaquemine rallied for a 20-25, 25-21, 25-9, 20-25, 15-8 season opening victory over Port Allen on Tuesday.
East Iberville opened the season hosting Donaldsonville Tuesday and White Castle opened the season Wednesday at Broadmoor.
"We played very inconsistent tonight and were not able to put plays together to stop their runs," St. John coach Chase Mancuso said. "We had some early season communication errors that helped extend their lead. Offensively, we made too many hitting errors and could not put the ball away and defensively, we were very sub par on passing the ball to the setter, especially on serving plays.
"Riverside is a very good team and should make another run at state this season. We had opportunities to stay in the game but could not put everything together. We just have to get back in the gym and continue to get faster and play better. I was extremely proud at the way my girls fought. That will be a huge factor this season as we continue to get better. We have to bounce back and learn from this game."
Emily Delahaye led St. John with six kills. Payton Passantino added four kills and two digs. Carlee Smith had 12 digs and Alex Carbo provided 11 digs.
O'Neisha Batiste led Plaquemine with five kills, eight assists and 20 digs. Mia Johnson added seven kills and four blocks.
Amber Harris provided 10 kills and four digs and Heather Honore provided 16 assists, eight digs and two kills.
